A couple of days ago, eight weeks of intensive grape harvesting came to an end. We are now able to report about the vintage of 2017:

During springtime we were threatened with late frost but after some fear and trembling, we were able to escape the damage as much as possible. The heat and drought periods in the summer forced the vines to extract the vital water from the depths of our primary rock soil. At the end of August came the long-awaited rain, which ensured the quality of the 2017 vintage. Despite the heat and dry periods in the summer, we are very happy about the healthy, fully-ripe grapes.

The vintage of 2016 started with an early bud break. At the end of April, the abundant number of grapes were naturally thinned out by frost. The summer was extremely varied (rainy/sunny), so that the vines could absorb enough nutrients from the soil. The ripening period was marked by a warm summer, which allowed us to harvest healthy, ripe grapes. The wines from the 2016 vintage are refreshingly fruity, with lovely flavours and pleasant acidity.

The Rieslings are characterized by stone fruit aromas that are reminiscent of apricots and vineyard peaches. The Grüner Veltliner impresses with a full-bodied aroma and reflects the character of the location beautifully. Especially successful this year is the Grüner Veltliner Privat, which is characterized by its cool minerality and notes of tobacco spice.

After a long, hot and dry summer, the long-awaited rain came at the end of August, Consequently, we were able to produce perfectly matured, full-bodied and variety-typical wines. The wines are ripe but not overripe and present themselves with a nice balance between fruitiness and acidity.

The patience of our winemakers was put to the test during this year. The weather seemed perfect until the end of August. The damp September and October however, made intensive selection work in the vineyard necessary. The best wines of this vintage need a full year (the Riesling even one and a half year) to develop their full potential. This vintage is a bit like the character of the 2010 vintage. As we do not use grapes affected by botrytis, the wines are a bit lighter.

After rather damp and cool weather at first, a beautiful autumn followed from mid-October.  Fortunately, we could wait until the middle of November to harvest the grapes.  This gave the wines a cool finesse and distinct mineral notes.
